Samsung's new Z Fold8, Z Fold8 Ultra, and Z Flip8 mark a first for the company: all three now use silicon-carbon batteries, a first for Samsung's smartphone lineup. The higher energy density of this battery type even allowed the Fold8 Ultra to gain a 600mAh capacity boost over last year's Fold7.
The Trade-off: Fewer Charge Cycles
Official EU EPREL energy labels reveal a downside — all three new foldables are rated at just 1,200 charge cycles, compared to 2,000 cycles for last year's Z Flip7 and Z Fold7. This rating reflects how many full charge cycles a battery can handle before its capacity drops to 80% of its original level.
Not Unique to Foldables
This isn't necessarily a red flag specific to these devices — it's a known characteristic of silicon-carbon battery technology in general, which trades some long-term cycle life for higher energy density.
