Samsung Galaxy Watch 9
Everything You Need to Know
A new Snapdragon chip, bigger batteries, and smarter health tracking — but is it enough to convince Galaxy Watch 8 owners to upgrade?
If you already own the Galaxy Watch 8, the new Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 will look strikingly familiar. Samsung hasn't reinvented the wheel this year — instead, it refined what was already a solid smartwatch by swapping in a more powerful chip, boosting battery capacity, and adding smarter health features. Here's our full first look at everything the Galaxy Watch 9 brings to the table.
What's in the Box & Available Colors
The Galaxy Watch 9 ships in a clean, minimalist box that includes a USB-C magnetic charger and a watch band — keeping things simple and familiar. The watch is available in two sizes: 40mm and 44mm, each offering a slightly different color palette.
Design & Build Quality
Visually, the Galaxy Watch 9 carries over the same squircle-shaped aluminum casing from its predecessor. Samsung didn't overhaul the exterior — and frankly, it didn't need to. The Watch 8 introduced a bold new square-leaning design language, and the Watch 9 simply continues that identity with refinements in comfort and materials.
- Armor Aluminum 2 lightweight casing — 17% lighter than before
- Sapphire Crystal glass screen protection for superior scratch resistance
- IP68 + 5 ATM water resistance — safe for swimming and showering
- MIL-STD-810H military-grade durability certification
- Redesigned quick-release 20mm silicone band for easier swaps
"There is no rotating bezel or rotating crown this year — the Galaxy Watch 9 keeps a clean, button-based interaction model, prioritizing simplicity and durability over gimmicks."
Display
Both sizes feature a vibrant Super AMOLED display that peaks at an impressive 3,000 nits of brightness — making outdoor visibility significantly better than average. The display resolution is sharp and responsive, sitting at 438×438 pixels on the 40mm and 480×480 on the 44mm, both at a 60Hz refresh rate.
The Big Upgrade — Snapdragon Wear Elite Chip
This is arguably the most significant change in the Galaxy Watch 9. Samsung has ditched its in-house Exynos chip and partnered with Qualcomm for the first time, bringing in the brand-new Snapdragon Wear Elite — a 5-core, 3nm processor built on TSMC's advanced fabrication process. The result? Noticeably snappier performance across the board.
The dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) is a particularly exciting addition — it enables on-device AI tasks like real-time fitness coaching, smart health insights, and personalized recommendations to run entirely on the watch itself, without needing to offload computations to your phone or the cloud.
Battery Life — A Meaningful Boost
Samsung increased the battery capacity on both models, and when combined with the more efficient Snapdragon chip, real-world battery life should be noticeably improved compared to the Galaxy Watch 8.
Battery Comparison — Watch 9 vs Watch 8
Both models support up to 10W wireless charging — 50% in ~10 minutes.
Connectivity — Leaps Forward
The Galaxy Watch 9 takes a significant step up in wireless connectivity, upgrading nearly every standard compared to the Watch 8. Here's what's new:
- Bluetooth 6.0 — upgraded from 5.3 for better range and lower power usage
- Wi-Fi 6 (2.4GHz + 5GHz dual-band) — previously Wi-Fi 4
- Dual-frequency GPS (L1+L5) — BeiDou, Galileo, GLONASS, GPS supported
- LTE available on select models for standalone connectivity
- NFC for contactless payments via Samsung Pay
Health & Fitness Tracking
Health tracking remains a cornerstone of the Galaxy Watch 9, and Samsung's Galaxy AI health suite has been expanded this generation. The watch is equipped with an impressive array of sensors:
- Optical Heart Rate + ECG sensor for continuous cardiac monitoring
- BIA sensor for body composition analysis (fat percentage, muscle mass)
- Sleep Apnea detection — upgraded with improved accuracy
- 🆕 Hearing Health — first Galaxy Watch to monitor ambient noise exposure
- Vitals, Heart Health Score, Daily Cardio Load via Galaxy AI
- Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Barometer, Altimeter & Skin Temperature sensor
Software — Wear OS 7 & One UI 9 Watch
The Galaxy Watch 9 runs Wear OS 7 wrapped in Samsung's polished One UI 9 Watch interface. Highlights include new first-party watch faces, an enhanced Now Bar for quick glanceable info, and the ability to control certain aspects of Samsung's new AI smart glasses directly from your wrist.
🛡️ Software update commitment: Samsung promises 5 major Wear OS upgrades and 5 years of security patches — one more OS upgrade than the Galaxy Watch 8 received.
Pricing & Availability
📅 The Galaxy Watch 9 went on sale on August 7, 2026. Pre-orders opened the same day Samsung announced the watch at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22, 2026.
