Official: Moto G4 Plus will get Android 8.0 Oreo after all
After Motorola published its list of smartphones that will be receiving updates to Android 8.0 Oreo,
a lot of people noticed that the entire G4 family, launched less than
18 months ago, was missing. Following that, it's been discovered that
the company altered the contents of an infographic regarding the G4 Plus - there was initially a clear mention of it receiving Oreo, which was then taken out.
As you might expect, a lot of owners of G4 devices weren't at all
happy with this situation. To avoid turning this into an all-out
scandal, Motorola has changed its stance now, officially confirming that
it will bring Oreo to the G4 Plus - and only the G4 Plus. The G4 and G4 Play will remain forever stuck on Nougat.
Moto says it never intended to update any G4 device to Oreo, and it
was simply a mistake that led to the aforementioned infographic claiming
otherwise. Even so, it's willing to work on this "unplanned" update and
release it for the G4 Plus, and only this model because the infographic
only referred to it.
Here's Motorola's full official statement on the matter:
It’s been brought to our attention that there were some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for Moto G4 Plus. This was an oversight on our part and we apologize for this miscommunication. It’s our general practice for the Moto G family to get one major OS upgrade per device, but it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it has already received, we will be upgrading Moto G4 Plus to Android O. Because this is an unplanned upgrade, it will take some time to fit it into our upgrade schedule. Watch our software upgrade page for more information.
This is probably the first outright mention of the company's update
policy for the G line, namely one big Android version and that's it. So
keep that in mind before you purchase a G5S or G5S Plus.
